Tudor Ghost-du-Jour: Katherine Howard

By the time the teenaged Katherine Howard (Wife #5) married Henry VIII, he’d already gone from a hot, athletic, charming prince to …well, one hot mess. He was grossly overweight and had an oozing leg sore that just wouldn’t heal, as well as some anger management issues.

As tempting as it must have been to get romantic with this particular 51-year-old guy, Queen Katherine seems to have had an affair instead. When the word hit the cobblestone street, she was put under house arrest in Hampton Court Palace. Legend says that she briefly escaped her captors at one point and raced down Hampton Court’s gallery (a long hallway) to beg the king’s mercy, but that the guards caught her and dragged her screaming back to her holding place. She was imprisoned for a few months and then executed in February of 1542.

That hallway is now known as The Haunted Gallery, as many visitors (including me) have experienced eerie feelings and sudden temperature drops in that area of the palace. People in nearby living quarters have reported hearing screams coming from the gallery. And guards from the Tudor period to the present time have reported seeing her ghost race down the hallway in a white gown.

You can see pictures of the Haunted Gallery here. Or you could actually take a ghost tour of Hampton Court, just in time for Halloween. They run from October 31 – March 7th.
